I wonder if it's because they think it would be a much easier division than the west.

You made the statement that the Iron Bowl was Bama's longest standing rivalry and I simply pointed out that there is an approximate 20 year gap in the number of games played vs. AU.
The fact that UA-AU squared off in a field on the southside in 1893 doesn't mean that Auburn is viewed as the longest standing.
