Incidentally, even though I believe in removing any and all symbols of the Confederacy from public institutions, I do understand the emotion and the love for the South that the song invokes. When I hear that slow version played, I get emotional too. It stirs something in my just like in all Southerners. That doesn't make it the right thing to do, though. We can love the South without perpetuating symbols that continue to make black Mississippians feel excluded.
Excluded from what at that point? And if you are solely concerned about feelings, why only black feelings?
Really curious as to your answer. What did black Mississipians feel excluded from? And that they wanted to be a part of?
You going to say power structure? What? What changed? Did something change on campus?
I think this is more about you, than it is them.

Come on, Sunbeam. You think it makes people feel all warm and fuzzy to be surrounded by symbols which celebrate slavery? And you can remind me that you and others don't see them that way, but the fact that many of them (and some of us) DO is justification enough...because the association of the Confederacy to slavery is utterly enjoined and undeniable.
The whole "only black feelings matter?" is the same oblivious question as the people who want to chant "All lives matter". Black people's feelings matter equally, but they have never had political power equal to their representation in the population, PARTICULARLY in the Deep South, and that is why we're even having this discussion.
