Guys who we might see by the ASB in 2017
Gwinnett (AAA)
Lucas Sims (SP/RP, 23) : 4-0, 2.16 ERA, 41.2 IP, 42 K, 9 BB, .171 Avg Ag (depending on what they do with Colon and how he pitches the next 4-5 starts, Sims could get at the least a spot start, or could come up in a Bullpen/Spot Start role)
Sean Newcomb (SP, 23) : 2-2, 2.89 ERA, 37.1 IP, 46 K, 19 BB, .227 Avg Ag (still has the same control issues he's always had and will probably never master them, but still has a huge arm and nasty strikeout figures. I think he'll end up being a nasty late inning reliever ala A. Miller, but my guess is he gets a shot at starting before 2017 ends)
Rio Ruiz (3B, 22) : .264, .759 OPS, 4 HR, 16 RBI (could slide into a platoon with Adonis Garcia; has very solid, consistent splits vs RHP while Adonis has the opposite)
Ozzie Albies (2B, 20) : .254, .289 OBP, 1 HR, 11 RBI, 11 SB, .670 OPS (I wouldn't be shocked to see Ozzie play the entire year at AAA, or at the least play there until the deadline when and if they unload Philips and get a Dansby 2016ish month in the Show before fulltime in 2018)
Other possibilities :
- Dustin Peterson, OF (should start playing again soon)
- Max Fried, SP (AA) (has been up/down in Mississippi)
- Akeel Morris, RP
- Caleb Dirks, RP
- AJ Minter, RP (still battling nagging injuries)
- Whoever can break the curse that Bonifacio has over Coppy that keeps him on the MLB roster
Allard, Soroka, Gohara, Weigel, Acuna, Alex Jackson, Demeritte and Riley have had solid springs so far. Exciting. Allard, Soroka and Acuna are making serious pushes to be in the conversation to make the 25 man in 2018 as 20 year olds. Pretty incredible.

I am very confident that those top 4 are going to be up this summer. We need be able to bring Garcia off the bench, which means that we need Rio to come up and play reasonably well. We play many more RHP than LHP and need to shore that up.
We need to be able to trade Brandon Phillips while his stock is fairly high. He started out really well and has already started to regress. The moment he strings together a strong week or two, I would flip him ASAP and call up Ozzie.
Regarding pitching, I think Garcia will be our best trading chip and once we call him up and either release or DL Colon, then we bring up Sims and Newcomb. I don't mind keeping Dickey.

Yea, I couldn't believe that Nicosio was on the 2nd Starting LHP we had seen this season. That doesn't seem possible.

Totally agree. We probably need him to at least continue playing above replacement level through early June when teams start really looking. So far so good though.

Yea, me too. Garcia is what he is. He's a solid #4 in a decent rotation. Colon has to go soon and Dickey as a #4 or #5 for the rest of the year is fine (unless someone Dave Stewarts us and offers something fun).

I'm also interested to see if Coppy is able (or willing, or interested) in trading some of our arms for a controllable major league bat at 3B or LF/RF at the deadline (or even a close to the majors bat from the Cubs). A lot of those guys are at peak prospect value level, and some of them will eventually hit roadblocks and start to fall. Of course, the risk is you trade the ones who become stars and keep the ones that bust, but at some point you have to make some semi-risky decisions.
It just seems that we match with the Cubs so well in terms of overflowing with arms and they are overflowing with bats. But hey, who knows.

I would be pretty thrilled if we went after Candelario, plus I think we could get him at a reasonable price considering he's perpetually blocked. We have enough arms that we can give up a good one or two and it wouldn't be a big deal.

Agree, and on top of that the Cubs are as short on young arms as they as are stacked with young bats.
