but you want to talk about rehash? "hey let's test the death star by blowing stuff up and sending a message." "We will use the death star to crush the rebellion." "we must stop the death star".... "This time instead of a cantina full of aliens let's use a market square instead."

The gator covered the rest, but as for rehash? See what the Vol posted. The movie's purpose (well, other than to make a ton of money) was to put flesh on the opening scroll of A New Hope. Since it was based on that, we knew there would be a Death Star, lots of rebels would die, and they'd succeed in stealing the plans. Expecting anything different would be akin to watching a movie about WW2 and being surprised the Japanese didn't win. That's not a rehash, first because the story hadn't previously been told and second because telling it was the purpose.

Now, the cantina, really? You're going to compare a scene in a "wretched hive of scum and villany" where one set of heroes use restrained self defense and a second shoots the guy trying to kidnap him to a scene were the HEROES stage a large ambush in a market crowded with civilians?

It isn't the same at all. There's nothing pushing the envelope about a murderer with "the death sentence on us him in 12 systems" getting his budddy's arm chopped off because his mouth wrote a check their arses couldn't cash. But having the heroes ignore the risk to involved civilians right after one of the heroes summarily dispatched an informant because he had become a security risk? Yeah, I want to see the Disney ride that tells that tale. Before Rogue One, the Star Wars morality discussion was about Han shooting first. Rogue One threw that cuteness right out the window - and that's, one reason I really liked it. Insurgencies are REALLY dirty. See the American Revolution, European resistance in WW2, and even what happened in Iraq after the US overthrew Saddam.

ETA - having said all that, I still enjoyed The Force Awakens and agree the second one has huge potential.

Kinda similar to Harry Potter series. Dumbledor knew the dangers of following the depths of the dark side. It's mentioned several times in the books knowing both sides of magic and walking the fine line between both was the real mastering of the powers.
