I realize the athletic department doesn't receive state funds and I recognized in my original post that heavy investment in football at a program like LSU directly benefits the academic side. My point is this contract feels like a huge waste of money. LSU football will still be in the black, but they would have been way more in the black with a contract that better reflected his market value, and thus able to better contribute to the academic side.

Regarding your claim that LSU does not have budget woes, you would know better than I would, so I'm not gonna argue this point all day. But I will just ask you, how do you explain the below Nola.com column in terms of your claim that government funding shortfalls are not affecting the university appreciably?

How is paying the football coach a rate that ranks 11th in the league a "huge waste of money"? For comparison, Mark Stoops made $3.5 million in base pay last season - the same amount Orgeron is scheduled to make next season.

That's not what he said, he said the ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT doesn't have budget woes.

That has ZERO affect on LSU Athletics. Athletics GIVES MONEY TO THE UNIVERSITY - not the other way around.

Why is this so fricking hard for you people to understand?

The LSU AD and TAF is flush with cash, they pay a coach Kentucky football coach level pay, and y'all are all freaking out.

I'm smelling something besides just concern for our program up in here...
