I think the essence of almost any religion is to answer the oldest question in humanity "why are we here"?

They generally go on to explain 'how we got here' (creation stories), 'what we're supposed to do while we are here' (religion rules, laws, etc.), and 'what's next' (afterlife, reincarnation, etc.). But they are all based on the question of 'why'.

I think people take comfort in the way religion approaches the 'why' aspect. People like to feel special and important. Believing you were created intentionally and 'in the image of' the creator of the whole universe makes you feel special. Feeling that you have a purpose.


The 'why' is something that I don't think science could ever answer. Maybe, but I just don't see how.
