Even though the school agreed to the BCS and the formula to determine a championship, when they saw they had some publicity behind them -- they tried to discredit LSU's claim. They had USC players on TV saying why they were the "real" champions, and the media just gobbled it up.

Later, when USC legitimately (albeit illegitimately, since it was later forfeited) won the BCS championship in 2004, the next year they said they wanted to Three-Peat. As if LSU's BSC championship didn't even exist. Once again discrediting LSU's win and trying to say their AP championship was the "real" championship and LSU's didn't count
