The SEC needs all or at least most of its games between Big 6 schools to matter. This was the worst SEC season since 09. The Big Ten was still a shitty conference this year but it was fun to watch because it had 4-5 good teams. The SEC had 1 good team.

It is the same matrix every year to be a "good" conference.

The fact is a conference will always be 0.500 with its own games. (not talking OOC games here for this purpose, although I know they are very important).
With that, a conference will be perceived as either
A. "weak" or "Has parity" if none of the better teams finish no better than 6-2 or 5-3.
B. "top heavy" or "weak, but State U" if there is one team that finishes high, where the others finish lower.
or
C. "good" when about 3 teams all finish with a conference record 7-1 or so.
It almost has no bearing on the weaknesses of the "bad" teams. (who couldn't beat Rutgers?)

The B1G had scenario C. this year, which always will produce the nation's view of the conference as strong, for those 3, maybe 4 teams, will always be playing each other each week or so, thus always having a big conference game.

Right now, the SEC is what the B1G appeared to be a couple of years ago with no obvious contenders to tOSU. (Ironically, Rutgers was probably better then).

Condition A will never have a marquee game that national interest will prevail. Seriously, would you be fired up to see who wins the Apple Cup if UW and WSU were both 5-3 in conference play and setting up a game with a 6-3 UCLA team in the Pac 12 championship game?
