To try and win a conference title of course.

Big deal, the current system has made conference championships meaningless. Condi Rice will just vote for OSU over PSU, and there you'll have it. Great system, right?

Comparing a 4 team college football playoff to the 68 team basketball tournament doesn't really work

Jesus fricking Christ, you people hear something, and just repeat it without even fricking thinking about it. Forget basketball. Should a 1 seed IN ANY frickING SPORT YOU WANT TO PICK ever advance after losing to an 8 seed?

No.

It's fine to give the Cinderella story underdog conference champion an automatic spot in the a 68 team tournament in basketball with 30 something wild card spots, but not in a 4 team college football playoff.

I agree, that's why I advocate an 8 team playoff.

I'm not sure why Alabama fans are so quick to dismiss all of the SEC titles they've won over the decades. Keep the meaning in conference titles, have a tournament of champions.

Florida's blowout loss to a 9-3 FSU, blowout loss to a 7-5 Arkansas, and their loss to an 8-4 Tennessee team unequivocally should preclude them from the 4 team playoff to determine the best team in the country.

I agree. But should they win the SEC, they should be invited to an 8 team playoff. I never want to see the SEC champions left out of the national title picture again. I've seen it way too many times in the poll days.

No, but that isn't what conference championship games (or conference tournaments) are for. They are separate from the national tournament, but can impact selection and seeding of course.

I'm not saying your tournament of champions idea is a terrible idea. I can appreciate that it has merit. I don't happen to like it because I actually like the uniqueness of college football in that it still has the greatest regular season of all the major sports in my opinion. Pretty much from that first game over Labor Day weekend you have this feeling that your season is in the balance. Every game feels huge. You don't get that in other sports.

I can appreciate the idea of making the conference title games/champions an extension of the national playoff, but I can't say I like the idea of 3 loss teams playing for the college football national title. I think rational people can disagree on this.
