Bear Bryant refused to accept a raise... saying it wouldn't be right for him to make more than the University president....hell of a coach and man.

Bear Bryant was a hell of a coach, but it was a different era, his salary was handled in line with the time he lived.
In the current world the big money boosters give money to athletic foundations who give it to the coach.
In the Bear's day big money boosters primarily instead gave sweetheart investment deals to coach and his family under the table and on the side.
How else do we think Paul Bryant, Jr. had the capital to own a bank while in his 20s?
Jr. is obviously now a capable, successful and generous businessman in his own right, but his 'hundreds of millions' from 'dog tracks, concrete, insurance, and banking' have their root in investments made in the 60s and 70s with his dad's buddies.
