Again, this isn't really a defense of him but it's a bit silly to blame him for the side of the ball that a supposed top 5 DC is obviously failing with. It's not like we have no talent. It's not like the offense is constantly screwing over the defense. The D (aside from chunks of Arky and most of USCe) is consistently out of position, can't tackle worth a damn, and seems to have a ton of trouble just getting lined up. Did Chavis get lazy? Are his schemes too predictable? Or does it even matter who is DC when we are stuck in a state where HS coaches treat defense like busy work they have to do while they wait to get back on offense?

He is responsible for the entire team as the HC. How many DCs does he get to hire before we say it isn't working?

Yes. Their backup is truly awful. I have been bagging on Hubes for being mediocre but he's Swag Kelly compared to Fafaul

We just let a fricking backup from Purdue throw for like 350 on us. You could probably not attempt a pass on us at this point and still score 30 points.

Sumlin doesn't know what he wants. Plain and simple. He's never had a plan from the very beginning other than a bunch of goalposts moving cliches and future excuses.

Ending up with Snyder is on the BMAs getting cheap on him when he was hired. His first choice was Pat Narduzzi and we didn't get him b/c of they balked at spending enough to pry him from MSU.

Even then, we knew our D would be trash for the first several years. It was awful under Sherman and was supposed to be a longterm rebuild.

The D was even fairly decent in 2012 but of course that was more than likely b/c of the lack of major injuries. I'm sure that was one of the main reasons Sumlin was reluctant to fire him in the first place. (that and the massive turnover from all the coaches that were getting hired away due to our surprise early success.)

So then we hire the great John Chavis. The beast of a DC that was supposed to magically fix all woes. EVERYONE loved it. But it turns out the LSU fans who had grown weary of him may have been right about him getting a bit lazy and overly predictable. He's had his moments but I think it would be fair to say Chief has been a bust overall.

Again, this isn't even really a defense of Sumlin. It's just that there are certain things beyond a HC's control that he isn't going to be able to wave a wand over no matter how much it makes people mad that certain things still aren't going the way everyone wants.

Etling in the 7 games w/Coach O running the show is a 60%+ passer in every game other than Bama and Florida and has just 3 INTs on the year.

Fafaul is about a 53% passer and has thrown 10 picks in the 6 games he saw significant time in.

Sorry but I don't see how anyone can watch much of either team play and come away thinking Fafaul is the same caliber as Etling.
