Was around in the 1970's when a similar idea was proposed. One would carry freight and another would be 1/2 sized and carry cars. High speed (150-300 mph) so you pull your car into a port at Houston and ride in your car at high speed to Dallas, then offload and use your own car instead of a rental. It works even better for distances under 600 miles where wait time in airports and actual drive time in cars can be greatly reduced.

You have "offloads" about every 15 min to 30 min so passengers can take bathroom breaks if necessary as the Meatloaf Mercedes may never come to pass. The only thing with making it totally no driver is that puts several million truckers out of jobs. Elevate rails and run them parallel to existing rails or highways.

If it puts truckers out of work, so what? It sounds effing awesome.

You do realize currently the sort and long haul truckers account for maybe 3 million jobs or so, right?

Viewed another way, think of firing every Wal Mart worker in America and then double it to equal the trucking business. Say Wal Mart pays 20K a year and a trucker can earn twice that.

Some simple math
1.5 million x 20K = 30 Billion in wages for all of Wal Mart
3.0 million x 40K = 120 Billion in wages for all of truckers

Do you really think taking 120 Billion in wages out of the economy will have no effect?
