I recommend Payne's for phenomenal bbq. Rendezvous is traditional Memphis style bbq and it's great too (my favorite type). Although some Memphians trash talk Rendezvous because they like super sweet candy-like bbq.

Central is good. Cooper-Young area is neat. Beale is worth it once just to say you went much like Bourbon St., though I definitely prefer other areas. Mostly, Memphis to me is like getting all the crime of New Olreans with 1/10 the stuff to do.
That being said, neither one of them are nearly as dangerous as people make them out to be if you just spend five minutes getting to know about them online and don't do stupid stuff while you're visiting. I've bar hopped plenty in both alone and have suffered nothing more than the occasional hangover.
