The players are resisting the scheme. They aren't executing the scheme. Seems like it's a lot more complicated and it's causing our guys to play slow. The coaches are either not teaching it well enough or not doing a good enough job to get the guys to buy in. The DC is becoming frustrated with it. Seems to be a lot of infighting and butting of heads.

I can sense the frustration from the players and I honestly don't blame them. It has to be frustrating to have someone ask you to change what you've been having a lot of success with. It's not that the scheme design isn't sound, but the execution of it has been very poor and that's on the players and coaches. I just don't like it. It's not who we are and seems like a very poor fit and very poor timing.

Sounds pretty normal for a new scheme, especially a difficult one

quote:

The thing that hurt us most this past week was tackling in my opinion. It had nothing to do with scheme or calls.”
definitely can agree with that

I can respect that they're trying to build a real fortress. A truly sound defense that isn't reliant on high risk pass rushing.

The truth is many of these DLmen who have gone to the league weren't anything special, they just benefited from the system.

Harris and others wanted the gravy train to keep running. Millions are at stake for him. Of course he wants those inflated stats.

Mark me down as someone who is willing to go through some growing pains to build this defense with a strong true foundation instead of a flash 'n dash brand.

Anyone can see how the offense's new system needs to be tuned. It's got to be the same thing going on with the defense.

Calm down.

Dave Matter just pointed this out on Twitter. "A reader brought this up and stats confirmed: In 2013, Mizzou's defensive ends didn't have a sack until the 4th game of the season. Among Sam, Ealy, Ray & Golden, Sam had 1st sack in 4th game of 2013. Ealy, Golden 1st sacks in Game 5; Ray in Game 6. That 2013 Missouri team ended up with 41 sacks, led the SEC, ranked 4th in FBS."

The read and react will benefit Mizzou in the long run by putting in place a defense that won't get run over in big games by teams with a lot of talent. The NFL primarily runs R&R schemes because a smart offense can neutralize aggressive DLs and make them pay.

My only concern is why this wasn't implemented more slowly - take a year or two to make the switch. Like half R&R and half aggressive DL this year. It will take time for it to feel natural, too much thinking and hesitation right now leading to missed assignments and tackles.
