My two cents... You throw to where the receivers are or to their potential. We haven't been getting separation down field and QBs are trained to look for that. You have a split second to scan the field to see if receivers are open or going to be open when you release. If not, you go to the screen. Outside, inside/over the top, screen... Speed, timing, touch, and leverage are key.

This is why you see the bump and runs. To throw off the opponents defensive player and create separation. Coaches create separation by plays and teaching different techniques to receivers and teaching QBs to look for weakness, separation, leverage, etc.
