Sounds like a very real possibility. Would be a home run for the city/downtown.

247 mentioned this a while back. Said there would be a lot of work to do in order for it to happen because of the lease on the old place.

There's some good discussion on it over on VQ. Somebody basically asked the same question and someone else answered it with:

quote:

It won't be the same team in Kodak... They will get a be getting a lower level minor league team. Randy is going to move the franchise to Knoxville. They will still keep the Cubs affiliation and I believe the buy out for them to move is going to be around 8 million. But this will be the final piece in downtown Knoxville's revitalization

He didn't put a link or say where he got that info from though. I asked, hopefully I hear something back. It would be on the 7 acres (Knox railway salvage) that Boyd just bought in the Old City. I'm hesitant on putting too much faith in getting a minor league team back here, but that would be a grand slam if it went through.

Even if all of what he said was incorrect and The Smokies ended up paying the 8 million dollar buyout to get out of the lease in Kodak and come to Knoxville.. I'd be happy as hell

I wonder how the move will effect attendance. I'm sure they've done some sort of study but I know a lot of tourists to PF/Gatlinburg probably drop by the games in Kodak. Not so sure that happens in Knoxville but the city and county population may make up for that.

Exactly what our family does each summer when we go to the area. Not likely we make the journey back to K-town for a game, but better to rely on your larger population than depending on the tourist industry to provide a large chunk of your attendance.

With Knox County now over 450k+ people and downtown booming all over the place (Gay St/Campus/Northern section of downtown by the Old city) I think it would be a grand slam for the city and the continual rebirth of downtown . I know several families out in West Knox that feel like making the drive to Kodak is a hassle, but would start going to the games more frequently if it was brought back downtown. With West Knoxville being the most populated part of Knox County I would think cutting the driving time in half would have good results from families in that part of the city.

I live in North Knoxville and would definitely be at a lot more games than the 2-3 per season that we go to now that it's in Kodak.

Fun to think of all the hypotheticals. If Asheville and Chattanooga can support minor league teams I have no doubt that we could as well with having 100k more people than Hamilton County/Chattanooga and something like 200k+ more people than whatever County Asheville belongs to.
