It was a sort of weird situation all around. Drew had faltered a little and resigned. But he stayed as track coach and Assistant AD. The AD was Hank Crisp who eased Drew out and hired Whitworth -- who had played at Alabama and was an asst.

One glitch was even though Alabama had struggled under Drew at the end of his tenure, all of Drew's assistant's stayed -- including Crisp who not only was AD, but line coach. (Can you imagine Saban's OL coach being the AD?)

That doesn't explain 0-10 for a minute, but Whitworth was curiously handcuffed for his tenure,too.
