Never would've thought Bama had so many liberals

I moved away at 5. But my 84 year old Springhill raised grandma subscribed to the nation, so I would've been liberal anywhere.

Well, let me correct that. I don't consider myself liberal now that I'm in Boulder, Co. These yuppies are fricking clueless. So I'm a southern liberal/west coast moderate. I mostly consider myself rational.

I'm a southern liberal born and raised in Tennessee's 1st District (for those who don't know your GOP history this is the oldest GOP district in the nation and the district's roots go back to East, TN's history of anti-slavery, pro-Union, pro-Lincoln radical republicanism - now they're just regular republicans although it took them much longer than the rest of the GOP to fall in line with the republicanism we have today). I also had many conversations and debates with republicans when I was a kid and I have to say that our politics changed sometime around when Dubya came in. I'm not sure how or why but that's when we really started disliking each other and tbh, I don't think it's healthy for us to continue down that path of hyper-partisanship we have right now.

At any rate, I consider myself as liberal as anyone but I've never had a problem getting along with conservatives despite those differences. Personally, I've found that just having conversations with people about political ideas rather than specifically putting things into partisan terms is the way to get people to drop the biases we have towards one another so we can talk policy. I think this is where we fail at the national level -- we get so caught up in labels and being on a team that we can't talk about issues without that influencing us. Most people really do want what's best for the country regardless of where they fall on the spectrum.
