I'm just saying he wasn't inaccurate in what he said and I'm not sure where you think he was excuse making for these kids.
That's the issue, I contend he is. In a very subtle way, he is directing focus away from their choices and disregard for the law in an attempt to lighten the situation. He's cast them as good boys who dindu nuffin but break the rules he outlined. The "rules" are easily relate-able and make the situation seem like it could happen to anyone, until you actually think about it.
I regularly stay out past midnight.
I regularly do things with guns that don't involve hunting.
I regularly associate with girls I don't know.
I have never made decisions relating to any of those things that led me to be charged with a felony.

Are you a future top 10 NFL draft pick with millions of dollars at stake? That's one difference. He can't do things that "normal" people do without extra concern for consequences.
Note: I'm NOT saying normal people have possession of stolen guns. I'm saying he doesn't need the added risk of bad things that could happen in ideal situations (not like this one when he had weed and guns) after midnight. Nor does he need to be hanging around girls he doesn't know/trust unless he is with a crowd. He's an idiot for the guns/weed thing, but Saban's point is still valid. He's a target for some opportunistic people and being with those he doesn't know after midnight increase chances for bad. Saban's point, I think, was that he should have known better at a basic fundamental standpoint on that and, had he been where he was supposed to be in the first place this wouldn't have happened.
