The problem is that NSD is before the draft. Yes, teams would like to take back players who weren't drafted. The problem is that what happens when the roster is full after NSD and a player wants to come back? Do you just tell one of the freshmen to frick off? Where would he go?

That all sets a bad precedent imo, and it's not like coaches have a crystal ball on who's getting drafted. So they're not going to take a chance on one of their underclassmen not getting drafted as opposed to signing a freshman and being assured that roster spot is going to be filled.
