Looking at OU boards the ones that want to leave want either the Pac or Big. Not many want to come to the SEC.
That is because they know how competitive the SEC is.... Oklahoma is a lot like Texas. They think they are the best, but they are going to always position their program to be at a competitive advantage. The Big 12 is an easy enough league that Oklahoma should always have a real shot at winning the title each year.
Historically, Oklahoma is a Top 3 program. But in modern-day football, there are 16 programs that are all pretty much on the same level if you combine athletic budgets, facilities, fan support, recruiting abilities, commitment to paying large sums of money to coaches, etc.
These programs are (in no official order):
Alabama
Auburn
Florida
Georgia
LSU
Tennessee
Oklahoma
Texas
Notre Dame
Michigan
Ohio State
Florida State
USC
Oregon
Clemson
Texas A&M
I would say Penn State, Miami, Nebraska, South Carolina, Arkansas, Wisconsin, UCLA, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Stanford, and a few others are slightly behind in the next grouping.
But Oklahoma knows that of those 15 other programs who have what it takes to compete with their own program, 7 of them are located in the SEC.... with Arkansas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, and even Mississippi State and Missouri not too far off behind.
The 9 non-SEC programs on this list (Oklahoma, Texas, Notre Dame, USC, Michigan, Ohio State, Florida State, Oregon, & Clemson) honestly don't have the guts to join the SEC.... I think only Clemson would jump at the chance, and that's more from a geographical standpoint. Oklahoam would be the only other one to consider it.
Texas A&M looked at joining the SEC as a pedestal to help give them an advantage over Texas and Oklahoma. Oklahoma would see the competition in the SEC as a hindrance that might knock them off their pedestal.
Either way, I think it would be a good fit. And I wish they'd join the league.
