Honestly, it was probably a huge floating island of trash.

Actually ... we thought the ship was pulling something in its wake, far behind it, until it passed the cruiser then submersed, then came up beside it some ways away ... then we lost sight of it.

Here's the kicker .... the commo officer, slash navigator, was able to hail the RTO of the ship, that's how we found out it was a cruise ship, and he laughingly told them what we had seen ... and the RTO told us they had picked it up on radar or sonar, but couldn't set eyes on what it was.

Now, the seas were rough enough down there that we could actually make out white caps ... and we had noted a few large icebergs north of them and other ships during most of the flight after we left Maine ... but this was no iceberg IMHO. It was big though. And it was black and white. Very defined but underwater we assumed because it would appear in shades.

If I had to describe it I would say it resembled a .....nah, I'd better not say. It's just not believable.

We all agreed to not talk about it ... things were different back then.

One time we jumped into Siciley DZ at Bragg ... middle of the night, pitch black dark. I was Primary JM on that jump as well but I had a butter bar LT acting asy secondary and we had slow sticks that night so we got out of our bird late, probably 5 seconds after green ... well into red.

We were well down into the lower part of the DZ ... a huge DZ mind you, ... the LT's name was Mike Harris from UT Chattanooga, I'll never forget it ... big UT Vols fan. And when we were rolling up our chutes we saw something, in the sky ... something I will never forget. It was ... well ... a UFO. There was no other explaination.

Now I shared that because we both agreed that night to never tell anyone .... but when we finally made it back to the cattle cars a lot of other troops were mumbling about it - others had seen it as well - but no official reports were ever filed.

Things were different back then.

I've had young troops, at reunions, tell me they still see things out there .... and pilot friends of mine. So it's still going on ... unexplainable things are out there. But not many people are awake enough to notice ... or their view is blocked by city lights, or they never look down or never look up ... or they rarely fly over the middle of the oceans in daylight or are never in remote areas at 3AM .... but I suspect those that are, and do, but they never talk about it for whatever reasons.

But there are things out there yet to be discovered or explained. We're just little tiny specks on this earth ... 7 billion of us barely make a dent really, in terms of awareness of our surroundings. There are plenty of surprises still in store.

You were cruising at 42000 and could see white caps? Not saying you didn't see something, but you seem to be taking a few liberties here.

What did you think you saw?
