Because at this point, even if you get the tickets it hasn't been determined where they will be, so the amount of the donation due on them is unknown until they are assigned. The donation they asked if you wanted to make was a straight donation to try to improve your ranking.

In other words, where some schools charge people $20 or so to get on a waiting list for tickets, you paid Ole Miss $800 to get on their "wait list". At least you might get it back though.

which means I've paid nothing.

As I said above, worst case scenario I'm out zero dollars and nothing is lost.

Best case scenario I double what I paid.

I really don't see a downside here.
