Well for starters, Tech and Texas State are the fallback options for Texas pub school applicants.

As is tamu. Though TX State has a great campus and party scene, and its a stones throw from Austin.
tamu's academics might be marginally better than State's, the overall experience attending a university in San Marcos far outweighs four years at tamu.
