As far as the only push-ups argument, I don't agree at all. However, I was in the best shape of my life when I was at OSUT at Fort Benning and there wasn't a barbell in sight. Body weight exercises can be effective but is not the most efficient.
Push-ups, pull-ups, flutter kicks, 60/120's, five mile fun runs and rucking were pretty much all we did. I was lean when I got there because I was already doing ROTC at Bama( which I did a lot of 11 mile battle buddy runs on Jack Warner) I actually gained about nine pounds because I pretty much lived in the push up position for two different phases of basic.
