Yes, you can. Welcome to California.

The 51K was merely his bonus for playing the Super Bowl.

California's state income tax is based on his total salary for the year, 1/23 of his total income, based on the percentage of games on his schedule that he played in the state.

If I'm not mistaken, all states with a state income tax levy that tax on out of state pro athletes that come to their state to play. California will tax Newton, and every player who played yesterday, on every penny they earned yesterday.

On the plus side for Newton, he played 15 of his 23 games in states that have no state income tax.

edit: OP was using Auburn math to arrive at his percentage, which of course, isn't accurate.
