4-star VanDarius Cowan has big Alabama tattoo, adds to LB depth

VanDarius Cowan

School: Palm Beach Gardens (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.)

Position: Inside linebacker

Height/weight: 6-foot-4, 225 pounds

Also considered: Florida State, Georgia, Oregon

247Sports composite ranking: Cowan is a four-star recruit, rated as the No. 83 prospect nationally, the No. 5 outside linebacker and No. 16 prospect from Florida.

How he fits into Alabama's plans: The one-time Florida State commit flipped his commitment to Alabama last April and reaffirmed his commitment to the Tide earlier this month, posting a video of him getting a large Crimson Tide tattoo with the caption, "My commitment 100,000%." While Cowan is listed as an outside linebacker, he's told AL.com's Drew Champlin that he expects to play inside linebacker at Alabama.

Projection for 2017: Cowan is likely to either contribute as a reserve or redshirt with Alabama as deep as it is at inside linebacker. Starter Shaun Dion Hamilton is back. So is Rashaan Evans, who was a top backup last year and then stepped into a starting role after Hamilton suffered a season-ending injury. The Tide also still has Keith Holcombe, former five-star recruits Mack Wilson and Ben Davis and Class of 2015 four-star recruit Josh McMillon.

Kyriq McDonald brings versatility to Alabama secondary

Kyriq McDonald

School: James Clemens (Madison, Ala.)

Position: Defensive back

Height/weight: 5-foot-11, 185 pounds

Also considered: Mississippi State, Florida State, Louisville, South Alabama

247Sports composite ranking: A three-star recruit, McDonald is ranked as the No. 477 national recruit, No. 47 cornerback and No. 22 in-state prospect

How he fits into Alabama's plans: McDonald likely projects as a star - the extra defensive back position when the Crimson Tide goes into nickel. He also figures to be a prominent special teams player, especially on kick coverage.

Projection for 2017: McDonald is an early enrollee, so he has a leg up on those trying to get in the defensive back rotation. With McDonald's excellent kickoff coverage skills, he could find a role there this fall as a true freshman.
