I love 1911's but I wouldn't go for one for a home defense gun. They are sometimes finnicky and have low magizine compacity. If you are looking for a home defense handgun I would go with a Glock. They aren't always sexy but they point, they shoot, and they do it with deadly accuracy. They are simple to clean, care for, and to clear malfunctions.

As far as 9mm vs .45 cal, I personally like 9mm more. The introduction of various types of personal protection ammunition for 9mm has really closed the gap on effectiveness significantly over time. It is also generally easier to find, cheaper, and can be just as deadly.

Just my two cents! Good luck man!!

If he's (or a muzzie she) is presenting a deadly threat and wearing body armor I want to hit that MF with a flying ashtray at 1900 FPS.

Not the normal .45 ACP approach, but the unexpected is an advantage on occasion.
