I agree. I think the committee is basically saying that if North Carolina or Florida win their conference championship game this weekend, then they are not automatically in the playoff.

These two teams have played poorly at times, played 2 FCS teams (UNC), barely beat Florida Atlantic, etc. So they haven't separated themselves over the course of the season, even if they do win the conference championship game. They may still get in, but it is not automatic.

Neither UF or UNC will be in the playoff if they win Saturday. Stanford will take one spot and either tOSU or ND will take the other.
