ISIS is Sunni.
Al Qaeda is Sunni.
The Saudis are Sunni.
Kuwait is Sunni.
Assad of Syria is an Alawite (Shia but not always aligned with majority of Shia)
Iran is Shia
Palestinians are mostly Sunni but ally themselves with Iran's Shia government
Iraq is majority Shia with a large Sunni population
Iran, Syria, Palestinians, and government of Iraq are Shia and work together. The Saudis and many of the Arab ruling governmetns are Sunni and actively work against them.

This is why Iraq is likely to remain volatile until another 'Saddam' comes to power there. There's a tug of war, Saudi Arabia on one side, Iran on the other, constantly pulling on Iraq.
