Okay, so let's say Fuente ends-up here.

What could he do at QB with what he would inherit?

Remember, the Paxton Lynch kid at Memphis was not recruited by anyone else. He only threw for 1000 yards with a 51% completion rate his entire HS career. Now he's a Heisman candidate.

Lynch reminds me of Scarnecchia if Scar would put-on some weight. Nunez might be a gem for Fuente.

What might Fuente do with some of the other returning players?

Will Pharaoh return?

Memphis is playing with some seriously undervalued talent - no big stars, no 4 or 5 star recruits. Mostly 2 and 3 stars and a lot of walk ons that the staff has developed.

This staff obviously has a good eye for talent and knows how to coach-em up.

(Note - I'm watching the Memphis @ Tulsa game as I type.)

I'm watching the game as well...and it just cements my opinion regarding Fuente.

He needs to be wearing Garnet and Black next year.

Considering what we know about Lynch, I think the sky is the limit with what he could do with our current QB talent. Add in McIlwain and holy hell....it makes my soul smile just thinking about it.

I've seen a lot of ppl elsewhere bitching about the # of 2 and 3 stars we're recruiting vs. 4 and 5 stars. I don't necessarily buy 100% into the stars assigned to recruits, though. You have 5 stars that are just unstoppable in high school but cannot adapt at the next level....and you have walk ons that end up making 5 stars look like scrubs. Get a coach in here (like Fuente) who has proven that he's able to develop players, finessing and building on natural ability, and suddenly you've got a team full of players who are all able to contribute at an elite SEC level when called upon.

I would love to see Pharoh return, but I've heard rumblings (as I'm sure you have) that he's leaving after this year.

Long and short of it...Tanner better get a jump on Fuente if he hasn't already.

that's been my biggest concern with Fuente. Lynch ended up at Memphis largely because of Darrell Dickey. Fuente clearly is a capable head coach. had he not landed Fuente would Memphis be the "turnaround" story be what it is this soon/at all?

in Fuente's first season he inherited a Texas Tech transfer qb in Jacob Karam at Memphis. Karam stat line for the 2012 season;

176/274 (64%) 1895 yds 14 td 3 int - 158/ypg (12 games)

Lynch came in and Fuente started him ahead of the SR Karam in 2013.

FR- 203-349 (58%) 2056 yds 9 td 10 int - 172/ypg (12 games)

SO- 259/413 (63%) 3031 yds 22 td 9 int - 233/ypg (13 games)

there's no denying what Fuente has done at Memphis. he has pulled in some talent that couldn't get into most SEC schools outside of the Mississippis and their slack entrance requirements. I am skeptical of his ability to go head-to-head in recruiting battles with our natural rivals having to comply with USC's entrance requirements instead of Memphis'. his staff would likely include Dickey (TX native/ties) and Galen Scott DC (Orland native - Illinois St player/asst coach).

I think Fuente would have success at Carolina. I don't know if he has all the attributes Ray Tanner outlined in his comments regarding ties to the Southeast and draw to USC.

right now I'm still leaning more to recruiting at an insane level with a known and aggressive staff around the Southeast and that brings me back to Kirby Smart and the staff he could assemble in Columbia.

having said that, I have no issues if Fuente were to be hired at USC.

I don't think there is any doubt that Fuente is a really good coach and would be solid here. My one question is the recruiting question. I could see him being more of a Pinkel who gets the most out of slightly above average talent. I just don't know if he has the ability to win head to head recruiting battles with Clemson, Georgia, and Florida. That's what it will take to ever win an SEC title. Just being a great coach won't get it done, you have to be a great recruiter too. But if he sells himself to Tanner, and Tanner believes he can get it done, I'm on board.

I wouldn't look too much at Lynch's HS stats considering he played in a wing-t offense and not much talent to throw to.

He could tear it up with Nunez and the recruit as they would flourish in his O.

Fuente made a 2* QB look like the best QB in college football. With Nunez, McIlwain and Mitch....he would have more talent to work with than he's ever had. One of those guys is going to become an absolute stud next season under Fuente.

He'll try to keep as many as he can and engage them/build a relationship, same as any other HC that comes in.

Pharoh is going to get drafted int he Top4 Rds, he gone, possibly Top 2 if he turns it on this last half of the season..

Sure, he found some quality 2 stars, but IMO, this is all coaching. Fuente is just getting his guys to perform at a higher level than most other teams in the country. His offense is outstanding, his defense is meh, but if he can bring in a top tier DC, then this could be a awesome for us.
