He's earned the right to do what he wants, but why not just announce you're retiring at the end of the season and finish up these last 6 games. It just seems out of character for him to not finish the season.

This. If he isn't going to be there next year the only value of him sticking around is for his own slow roll into retirement party. Spurrier obviously doesn't want that. By leaving now USC can start focusing on who will replace him. Also, if Spurrier doesn't feel like his coaching is working he is doing the right thing by stepping aside.
