Grier in the UT game:

1-10 - misses wide open Callaway over the top - perfect type of throw to be INT'd by safety, but luckily, safeties were playing too wide to take advantage.

3-6 - leaves the pocket after 1 second didn't even look to pass - leads to punt (pressure was not that bad).

Punt

1-10 - behind Jake Mcgee on roll out, jake makes a great catch spinning around and takes it for a first down

Only pass of drive - 3 straight runs = TD by Kelvin Taylor

2-3, UT blitzes, picked up, CJ worton is open underneath - Grier dumps it down, Worton not even looking. Weird play.

3-3, no pressure, easy throw in 5 yard out, timing is completely off with Grier and Callaway, misses what should have been an EASY first down.

Punt

1-10, some pressure, doesn't even look to pass, runs right into sack

2-15, no pressure, good pass on a short 5 yard in by Brandon Powell working left to right, 7 yards after catch on well timed throw, 3-3 to go now.

Kelvin Taylor running play on 3rd down - gained 2, needed 3

Punt

After 3 runs and a first down

1-10 DRob 7 yard curl - first read, easy pass, good pass and catch - gains 9

2-1, audibles at the line (sees blitz) hits Callaway on easy 5 yard curl, good pass and catch, gains 4 more after catch

1-10, 5 yard out to Callaway moving left to right, good pass, Callaway just alligator arms it. INCOMPLETE

2-10 UT blitzes, Mcgee left open on short 3 yard out going right to left, rumbles for 4 additional yards. Good throw.

Maybe worst play call of the day in my opinion - read option on 3-3, destroyed by UT.

Punt

1-10 after UT TD - stands in pocket, delivers great pass to Callaway in middle of the field - 13 yard gain

1-10 throws slightly behind Callaway as he runs right to left across the field - deflected - good defense - INCOMPLETE

3-13 - after loss on a run by taylor - late to Brandon Powell on a little hook route, he takes it 11 of the needed 13 yards, but can't get a first down. An earlier throw may have been a first down here.

4-2 great pass on roll out to Jake Mcgee - gain of 13 - big first down

2nd worst play call of game due to timing - trick play doesn't work avlin bailey pass inc

2-10 miscommunication with WR Antonio Callaway, throws deep, but WR broke it off short

3-10 overthrows simple out to Jake Mcgee - good throw is probably a first down

Punt

1-10 after UT FG - perfect back shoulder throw to Callaway against a really good corner.

1-10 (after a few runs) no one open, barnett gets pressure, Grier takes off for a couple yards

2-7 Does not look of safety, terrible throw and read - INT

INT

So lets recap the first half:

On 21 drop backs - (please note he was not under a lot of pressure the line played pretty well)

He was 10-18, 115 yards, 1 INT
3 runs, -5 yards (1 sack)

of his 8 misses,
1 overthrow on first down - first play of game
2 of them were very simple third down routes that he simply missed.
2 were dropped by WR
1 was a miscommunication
1 is a horrible read and INT at a really bad time
1 is a PBU on a good play by corner

To look even closer, on third down: 1-3, 11 yards, 1 rush -5 yards rushing, 1 sack 0-4 third down conversions with the ball in his hand. 1-1 4th down for 13 yards and 1 conversion. 2 of his misses on 3rd down were simple missed opportunities.

Take what you want from this. I will do the 2nd half when I have time.

Point is though, a lot of opportunities were left on the field because of unforced errors in this half in the passing game.

Very good analysis.

Also, as with a lot of young QBs, Grier gets happy feet in the pocket a lot of times, and loses his footwork when throwing and his accuracy becomes off.

A few times, he was very accurate off his back foot, like the 4th down throw to McGee on the first TD drive in the 4th Q.

But he is a RS Freshman, and mistakes like these are to be expected.
