And today is when the British captured Baton Rouge I believe from the Spanish.

Other way around. Spanish Governor Galvez captured Baton Rouge from the British. After the French & Indian War, Spain was given control of the portions of the Louisiana territory west of the Mississippi River plus the Isle of Orleans (East of the Mississippi River, but South of Bayou Manchac, including modern Day New Orleans and the River Parishes). France had to give up the rest of her territories east of the Mississippi to the British (Quebec, New France, Acadia, ect). Spain, for their losing role, lost Florida (modern day Florida plus coastal Mississippi and Alabana and the Florida parishes).

During the Revolutionary War, after Spain sided with the Americans, Governor Galvez embarked on a highly successful campaign, defeating British garrisons in Baton Rouge, Mobile, and Pensacola, preventing the British from supplying their invasion of the colonies from the South (Cornwallis invaded at Charleston, SC and worked his way north, but had to be supplied from England).
