batting the ball on an onsides kick is illegal, and that was clearly done by the 'Bama 'good hands' team.

Batting the ball isn't illegal, but intentionally batting it forward is illegal.

However, the tipping of the ball on the onside kick was a reviewable play. It was almost a minute later before Bama snapped the ball and the replay officials didn't blow it dead. I think it's safe to say they couldn't determine if he intended to bat the ball forward or was trying to one hand snag it or bat it somewhere else (only intentionally batting it forward is illegal). It didn't look intentional to me, and it obviously didn't look that way to the officials on the field or in the booth, but I'm sure others will disagree.

I really think that everything short of tackling and a helmet to the stomach ought to be legal on an onside kick. Batting the ball should definitely be an option. The kicking team rarely recovers as it is.
