From what I understand this game in Charlotte, at the behest of ESPN and thus the SEC offices, allowed UNC to cancel-out the two home games they owed us in the future. But there is word that it's actually a three game deal that carries over to something like 2020 and 2021.

Also, no one is really happy about having to play this early game in Charlotte. The day and place is not the problem - but the time is an issue. Spurrier and Tanner have smiled their way through it, but they're not happy about it. I doubt they'll do this to us again five or six years from now. It'll be scheduled for later in the evening.

Spurrier has been vocal about the high ticket prices as well. Not sure that'll change.

This is strictly a made for TV game and that sucks in a lot of ways. College football, and especially the SEC, should not allow TV to control times like this. Or at least they should put-up a fight. One hour would have made a huge difference IMHO.

Edited to add: I just saw the press release that we are playing them again in 2019 and 2023. Go Gamecocks texted it as I was hitting the post. Those dates are so far out, who knows what will happen by then but those must have been ESPN negotiated.

I really wish we would get the Chick-fil-A opener in Atlanta one year.

As I understand it, we were offered to play FSU, and Spurrier said he wasn't interested. Dunno if that's true or not, but it's been floated around.

I'm ambivalent about playing UNC. On one hand, it's probably my second-most hated school that we play after Clemson. I despise UNC, and by extension, I appreciate that we're renewing this thing. On the other, we don't gain a whole lot by beating them. If USC wins, well, USC was supposed to. But if USC loses, OMG SPURRIER SUX LOL COCKS !!111one! USC already recruits well in NC without playing UNC or NC State regularly.

If the rest of the schools in the conference are too chicken shite to play decent out-of-conference schedules (looking at you, Mizzou) it doesn't make a lot of sense to hamper your chances at playing in a better bowl game because you have UNC/UCF/Clemson in a single season.
