Meh, he did a good job turning Louisville into more than also ran in football, set Petrino up with a very good team, set Louisville up to be attractive enough to move from CUSA into the big east and eventually the ACC (Basketball isn't enough or Memphis would be sought after by P5s)

Michigan State did something to him psychologically, he hasn't been the same caliber HC since then, he's always had his quirks, but something happened.

May have been as simple as his financial dealings, stress and loss effect people in funny ways. Of course he had that and his brother dieing while he was here all the while knowing it was a temp job from the start. I really don't understand why he left the Weber St job to come here for that, probably the players would be my guess.
