That is why I said, "late" like bowl season late

During bowl season, the only teams in the national title discussion are the ones playing in the game.

Auburn has won a title in that time frame and been in the discussion another five times

So please explain...

How old are you? In the 50 years I referenced the BCS/Playoff system has been in place less than half of that time.

'83, '89, '93 (edit), '04, '10, '13 so it was actually six …During the pre-BCS era the outcome of multiple bowl games determined the national title. In most years there were 5 or 6 teams with reasonable opportunities to be the national champions.

Pretty sure Auburn was not in the BCS title discussion in 2004.

Auburn was being talked about in the National Title dicussion by main stream media during bowl season.

Print the shirts?

Doesn't change that in '89, despite a "tie" for the conference championship, both Alabama and Tennessee were selected for the upper-tier bowls.... in '93, Auburn was banned from postseason play, and in '04, you weren't considered for the BCSNC.

So congrats on being overlooked in favor of Miami in '83?
