We have a sample size of 2 for Malzhan at Auburn, a great 2013 and a pretty mediocre, almost sub-mediocre 2014.
Which one is more indicative of his future seasons? Well we don't know for sure, as the seasons tick by we'll know more.
It makes Auburn fans mad, but pretty much the entire world outside of Auburn views their 2013 season as largely a fluke. 2014's results reinforced that viewpoint.
If Auburn contends nationally again in 2015, Malzhan can prove himself a good coach. Any buffoon can luck their way into a great season or even win a championship, it's very difficult to make it happen multiple times.
However if Auburn comes out and goes something like 8-4 again, well that will continue to confirm what a lot of people think, 2013 was mostly a fluke and Malzhan is probably a 8-4 type coach.

There's plenty of buffoons that haven't lucked their way into anything, though. Luck or not, you still have to put yourself in the position to win those games.
I don't disagree with anything else you said. 2015 will be a good indicator.

Malzahn was responsible for vast improvement in 2009 with Chris freaking Todd as the QB, as well as the natty in 2010 (obviously with help from Cam Newton).
