To answer a few questions: UGA was founded by Yale graduates so it makes sense to stay with an English bulldog. American bulldogs also can have heat-related problems and more than a few have cancer issues. They are also not exactly great dogs to have around loads of unknown people and children that all want to pet him. The newer hybrid Olde English Bulldogs would likely be a better option as they tend to have a better temperament and less issues with heat than the English Bulldog. However, all purebred dogs are inbred to some extent. The biggest issue is with the all-white requirement. This is a recessive trait and so it is likely to be accompanied by all the other non-ideal traits. Actually Uga VII was a feisty little thing and thoroughly enjoyed jumping up after the flags from the band in pre game festivities. It is just the past two that have been sedate throughout the game.

I have always heard Georgia picked Uga because they wanted a mascot their fans could relate with, and the school knew most of their fans could relate with a product of inbreeding
