I've said before that the hippies were railing against basically the same thing as the John Birch Society. Media draws these cultural lines and portrays groups in a certain way. We see the same thing now with The Tea Party Movement and Occupy Wall Street. One is portrayed as racist redneck religious crazies and the other as unwashed lazy hipsters who don't want to get a job. But I talk to normal, non-conspiracy theorist type people and they can see very quickly they have a lot in common. We have many foibles that they exploit, and one of them is that once a group or person is branded with other-ness, critical thinking stalls and the message is lost. And of course they're co-opted and subverted as you said. Charles Manson was the final propaganda tool, probably got MK-ULTRA'd.

When Occupy was a thing I waisted a lot of time online trying to explain the similarities to the Tea Party, and how easily the media brands two groups with the same major goals as polar opposites.

Divide and conquer.

John Birch Group, another nugget I wasn't aware of. Thanks.

Grateful for the term Hegelian dialectic. I've been hitting on that concept for awhile, it's kind of like finally putting a face with a name.
