hard to reconcile what i'm hearing with things like this, hence the confusion

quote:

The Texas A&M vs. LSU border-state rivalry football game will be played on Thanksgiving Day in 2014 as part of the traditional “rivalry weekend,” the Southeastern Conference announced on Wednesday.

quote:

“Texas A&M and LSU has always been one of nation’s best rivalries,” Texas A&M Director of Athletics Eric Hyman said. “It has all the trappings of a great rivalry – passionate fan bases, bordering states, close proximity, unmatched traditions and history. College football’s rivalry weekend is the perfect home for the Aggies and Tigers.”

Texas A&M will resume its tradition of playing football on Thanksgiving on Nov. 27, 2014, replacing long-time Turkey Day rival Texas with SEC West opponent LSU. The positioning is meant to stoke and elevate the rivalry between the Aggies and Tigers, who have a memorable history of 51 games, though only two of them have been played since 1995.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about reconciling it.
It appears that the university chooses to market the game as an old rivalry/inter-division match-up.
They're not forcing you to adopt a similar viewpoint.
Breathe easy.
