I'd say that it's because of the direction that t.u. wants to take.
They want to be the University of California at Austin.

If the longhorns went to the Pac10 or Pac12, whatever that conference is called, say goodbye to the football programs at TCU and Baylor.

I'd settle for the University of Texas at San Diego, but, yeah, can't really argue with this.
