I think Fayetteville is truly an outlier to evolving from a college town to a sprawling metro area. It's not every day 5 Fortune 500 companies set up shop within reasonable distance of what was originally a remote area, and in a state with only one true tier one institution at that.
The Fayetteville metro area didn't exactly grow strictly because of UA. A lot of credit goes to those companies who made the commitment to stay instate and not outsource its operations, and as a result NWA is a hot place to be. Frankly it's he most underrated road trip in the conference, and it's not even close. I'm so happy LSU left that shite hole in Little Rock, even though the tailgating was a lot more fun

The isolation of NWA actually helped along its growth. There are only 3 Fortune 500s HQ'd here. Two of those at least had a symbiotic relationship when they were just gritty local businesses. The UA definitely caused most of the growth to happen. The site was chosen due to the views from the Hill, (although UA succeeded "Arkansas College" which was in Fayetteville but was burned down in the civil war). In short, UA gave people from other (at the time wealthier) areas of the state a reason to visit NWA who otherwise never would have. Lots of them decided to stay over time, which helped to develop the business community.
