I don't see how Auburn is any more in the middle of nowhere than Tuscaloosa is. Tuscaloosa is surrounded by Fayette County to the north, places like Linden to the south, and rural Mississippi to the west. Those places are the textbook definition of the middle of nowhere

Depends on where you're coming from. To me Tuscaloosa is practically a Birmingham suburb, but I'm from Atlanta. I know people from Alabama view them as clearly distinct, which skews how some may view it.
