Athens combines the best of both categories, which is why it's #1. Meaning, it's got a distinct college town feel (like 5 downtown Auburns or Oxfords put together), but the larger size and offerings of Tuscaloosa and Baton Rouge and Knoxville.

I don't see how Auburn is any more in the middle of nowhere than Tuscaloosa is. Tuscaloosa is surrounded by Fayette County to the north, places like Linden to the south, and rural Mississippi to the west. Those places are the textbook definition of the middle of nowhere
