If there was something adjacent to the boundaries of the Universe, expansion would be inhibited. One idea, M Theory, says that the Universe was created when two Branes touched together at a point.

So, the idea that there is something beyond the Universe is popular but that doesn't exclude that there is nothing between the Branes, thus not inhibiting our U's expansion.
