It's not even really about the football anymore at this point. It's the fact that the people in charge are actively undermining what's best for two schools in their system essentially just to make themselves look better.

Of course its about football thats all you talk about. Not sure how throwing away millions on a football program few care about is best for anyone. Lastly if this was to make ppl look better, how is that working out?

Do you know how many college football programs make money? Not many.

Do you know how many of my neighbors owe thousands in credit card debt? Lots of them. Doesn't mean I should do it

Football is worth the money spent for most colleges. It improves the identity of college, broadens it's profile and appeal, and vastly improves the student experience.

This is laughable. Having your name appear on the crawler on ESPN does not improve your identity and there was basically no student support in 20 years. UT Arlington does not have football yet they are a higher ranked and bigger school than UAB

quote:

You can't make money without spending money. It's next to impossible to succes without the right tools, and UAB was constantly denied the tools to succeed. Don't approve a coach that's all but paid for. Don't approve a stadium that's all but paid for. Don't approve facilities that are all but paid for. UAB has worse facilities than Hoover HS and was never allowed to upgrade. How are you supposed to win with that? You create an atmosphere for failure and then act surprised when it fails.

That is a flat out lie that the facilities were all but paid for. They were going to have to borrow $75 million to pay for that stadium. Do you know how many schools don't have on campus stadiums? Are they all being denied by a board of trustees? South Alabama does not have one and there are zero plans to build one.

Tulane just built a brand new on campus stadium last year. Their already abysmal attendance went up 2,000 people.

Borrow money that was already pledged by private donors. Not sure if you guys understand how this works or not but you can't just drop off a check on the coaches desk and say build me a stadium. This kind of stuff has to be approved, and UAB never had a chance because the BOT wouldn't even listen to them.

UAB has a very wealthy alumni base, so not sure why you doubt they could get money. Remember how young of a school UAB is. They have very wealthy alumni, but the base is still small. The oldest UAB alumni have barely reached retirement age. 20 years ago when the football program started they had even fewer alumni and they were all still working. As time goes on and they produce more alumni, many of whom are very successful, the support will only grow.
Not to mention UAB also has the support of some very powerful business people around birmingham that wanted to help back the stadium, who have no connection to UAB other than wanting what's best for the city.
