Side by side comparisons

Who's this year's DUDE at wide receiver?

There are a lot of wide receivers in this class that are elite but if I'm starting my team tomorrow, I don't think there's a clear No.1 or even a clear 2 or 3 that I'm confident will take over a game or a team. Just about every major name at receiver will be facing off head to head at this event so if an alpha dog doesn't emerge in this group then we need start expanding our search.

To me, the best candidates are Binjimen Victor, Nate Craig-Myers, Kyle Davis and DeKaylin Metcalf. All of those guys have the elite size you are looking for in a No. 1 and all of them have the athletic upside you need. Each has his warts though. Maybe this is the year that a smaller guy is the top receiver.

Is this the best collection of slot talent we've ever seen at The Opening?

Last year at The Opening, Christian Kirk put on a show. In 2013 it was Braxton Berrios and Speedy Noil that were running open out of the slot. In 2012 it was Ryan Switzer and Steven Mitchell. 2015's slot group may outshine all of those guys.

Sam Bruce is tiny but he's a nightmare for inside defenders in man or zone coverage. Mecole Hardman Jr. has similar traits and even more size. For my money, the most exciting player in the country is USC commit Melquise Stovall. The running back has outstanding route-running and pass-catching skills and he might as well be another slot receiver himself. Four-star Maryland commit Darryl Turner also has outstanding playmaking ability in a small package. Then there's the late addition of 2017 receiver Tyjon Lindsey who may just top all of the above.

If you want excitement and production, those are the guys to watch.

I wish we could get in with Bruce. He absolutely abused the competition at the Rivals 5-Star Challenge.
