St. Paul's 2017 defensive lineman Ryan Johnson receives Auburn offer

St. Paul's 2017 defensive lineman Ryan Johnson received his first college offer on Wednesday, and it is a big one.

Johnson (6-foot-4, 245 pounds) received an offer from Auburn after unofficially visiting the school's campus on Saturday, according to Saints' coach Steve Mask. Johnson is scheduled to take an unofficial visit to Alabama this weekend.

"He has a lot of upside," Mask said of Johnson. "He is going to be a big, tall kid. He plays well with his hands. He has the world in front of him. He's humble and he really wants to be good, and those two things are really important."

A broken arm limited Johnson's time on the field as a freshman, but he started all 15 games in 2014 as a sophomore and helped the Saints to the Class 5A state title. He finished the year with 38 tackles, four sacks, three quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery.

"Ryan really can play an inside tackle or an outside tackle," Mask said. "Auburn likes him as a defensive lineman period."

Another St. Paul's standout receiving a lot of attention lately is tailback/strong safety B.J. Edmonds. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound junior received an offer from South Alabama on Wednesday. That followed an offer from Louisiana Tech earlier this week and Georgia Tech last spring.

Edmonds was on campus at Auburn last week, according to Mask, and is expected to be on Alabama's campus next week. Mask said Alabama likes him as a running back. Louisiana Tech coaches said they weren't sure yet, that they might play him on both sides of the ball.

"The sky really is the limit for B.J.," Mask said. "He is starting to get a lot of the recognition he richly deserves. He is very powerful and very physical. He has the ability to play on either side of the ball."

Edmonds shared time in the backfield last year with fellow junior Ostin McPherson, giving Mask a welcome challenge at the tailback spot.

"We literally have taken the lead from Alabama and Auburn," he said. "We try to keep both kids fresh throughout the year. There are enough carries for both of them. They are basically 1A and 1A1. We have two great backs."

Along with Edmonds and McPherson, other St. Paul's seniors-to-be being recruited include lineman Darius Whitfield, quarterback Miller Mosley and defensive end/linebacker Bryce Huff.

2016 5-Star LB Ben Davis Tweets Top 7 Schools
By Brian Pedersen , Featured Columnist Feb 25, 2015

Six SEC teams and one West Coast power are in the running for the services of 5-star linebacker Ben Davis, but thanks to family connections one school might have a distinct advantage.

The 2016 prospect announced his top seven schools on Tuesday via Twitter:

247Sports rated Davis, a 6'4", 230-pound outside linebacker from Gordo, Alabama, as the nation's No. 24 overall prospect in the 2016 class. He's ranked as the second-best player in the state and fourth-best recruit at his position.

Davis is the son of former Alabama star Wayne Davis, who played linebacker for the Tide from 1983-86 and holds the school career tackles record with 327. He's made several visits to Tuscaloosa already, most recently last weekend, when he went to campus at the same time as fellow 2016 in-state prospects Lyndell Wilson and Marlon Davidson of Montgomery.

Wilson, also a linebacker, and Davidson, a defensive end, are ranked first and third in Alabama among 2016 recruits, per 247Sports. A package deal has been discussed between the trio, Davis told John Garcia Jr. of Scout.com.

"Whenever the time comes to pick a college, if we're together that’s going to be cool and if we go different ways, that's going to be cool, too," Davis said. "We're real tight with each other."

All 24 predictions made by 247Sports analysts have tabbed Davis as a future Alabama player, following his father's footsteps. Alabama is listed as an 86 percent favorite for Wilson, while Davidson is projected as going to Auburn.

According to Scout's Garcia, Davis plans to visit Auburn, LSU and USC during the spring and summer and could commit before beginning his senior season at Gordo High School. Last season he helped the Green Wave to a 14-1 record and a berth in the Class 3A state semifinals.
